Everything is removed from the existing joints first. That includes grinding out any excess mortar or old grout that has spread between the joints, so the area is properly prepared before the new grout goes in.

Modern resin jointing compound gives a clean, professional finish, and it is designed to stay that way rather than wash out in a year.

A properly filled joint leaves nothing for weeds to root into, so you are not out there pulling them up every few weeks.
